Galerie Buchholz präsentiert eine Ausstellung von Yuji Agematsu in zwei Teilen. Der erste Teil wird unter dem Titel “Zip: 01-01-2024 - 12-31-2024”, anlässlich des Gallery Weekends Berlin eröffnet und zeigt ein Jahr seiner bekannten “Zips” - kontemplative Miniaturskulpturen, die Agematsu aus Abfällen herstellt, die er während täglicher Spaziergänge in den Straßen New Yorks findet. Leicht arrangiert pflanzt er diese Fundstücke eines jeweiligen Tages in die Zellophanhülle einer Zigarettenschachtel.
Dreihundertsechsundsechzig dieser Zips sind in der Galerie Buchholz auf vom Künstler konzipierten Regalen ausgestellt und erinnern an die Spaziergänge, die Agematsu im Laufe des Jahres 2024, einem Schaltjahr, unternommen hat. Seit 1996 hat Agematsu jeden Tag einen Zip hergestellt, dreißig Jahre lang ist er spazieren gegangen und hat sie angeordnet. Bis heute kann er der Klarheit der Welt in den Zellophanhüllen nicht widerstehen, all diese Tage, all diese Spaziergänge, eine vage Angelegenheit wie in einem Traum, amorph und nur schemenhaft wahrnehmbar, ohne Anfang und ohne Ende.
Der zweite Teil der Ausstellung “Marseille 1994” wird am 26. Juni in unserer Berliner Galerie mit einer Performance des Künstlers eröffnen. Es ist die Premiere einer Installation aus projizierten 35-mm-Dias, die der Künstler 1994 in den Straßen von Marseille aufgenommen hat.
Yuji Agematsu (geb. 1956 in Kanagawa, Japan) lebt seit 1980 in New York. Er studierte bei Tokio Hasegawa, einem Mitglied der Band Taj Mahal Travellers, und dem Jazz-Schlagzeuger und Choreografen Milford Graves. Seine Werke befinden sich in den Sammlungen des Brooklyn Museum, New York; des Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; des Guggenheim Museum, New York; des Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Buffalo; des Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio; des Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, sowie in der Pinault Collection, Paris, und der Loewe Foundation, Madrid.
Dies ist die erste Einzelausstellung von Yuji Agematsu in der Galerie Buchholz sowie auch seine erste in Deutschland.

Galerie Buchholz presents an exhibition by Yuji Agematsu in two parts. The first part, “Zip: 01-01-2024 - 12-31-2024”, will open for Gallery Weekend Berlin, and features a year of “zips” - tiny devotional sculptures Agematsu produces from detritus that he comes across in New York’s streets, and then gardens lightly inside the cellophane sleeves of cigarette packs. Three hundred and sixty-six of these zips are displayed on shelves at Galerie Buchholz, memorializing daily walks taken in succession over the year 2024, a leap year. Since 1996, Agematsu has made one zip for each day, thirty years of walking and arranging. To this day, he still cannot resist the clarity of the world in the cellophane, all those days, all those walks, a vague, dreamy affair, amorphous and dimly perceived, without beginning or end.
The second subsequent part of the exhibition “Marseille 1994” will open 26 June in our Berlin gallery with a performance by the artist. Agematsu will premiere a new work - an installation of projected 35mm photographs he shot in the streets of Marseille in 1994.
Yuji Agematsu (b. 1956, Kanagawa, Japan) has lived in New York since 1980.
